Framestore - Living, breathing colour creating the Legend of Tarzan in new ColorEdge film
EIZO ColorEdge has released the third of its ‘Living, breathing colour’ film series featuring Framestore, the Oscar winning visual effects studio who have worked on films such as The Legend of Tarzan, Gravity and The Avengers. The film outlines how Framestore created the animal world in The Legend of Tarzan, rejecting motion capture in favour of a more subtle realism through stop frame, taking the bold decision to hand animate the apes. “They looked into using motion capture and using human performers to do the ape action but in the end they felt it just looked like a man imitating an ape and what they wanted was something more authentic” Kevin Spruce, Animation Supervisor.
Mangani, the fictitious apes in the original Edgar Rice Burroughs novel are recreated through observation of real life gorillas and chimpanzees replicating the meticulous detail and behaviour as closely as possible in the animation. “We study live action footage of apes in the wild and at zoos to the 8th degree and last detail until we feel like we know everything about that creature”.

Part of a wider repositioning for EIZO ColorEdge, led by Sheffield studio Peter & Paul the new marketing campaign also sees the creation of the EIZO Award, a design competition aimed to engage young creatives by offering winning students placements in some of the worlds leading creative institutions including: Heatherwick Studio, Rankin, Somesuch and Studio Dumbar.
The EIZO Award is a competition open to all UK University students studying within four creative disciplines; Photography, Film and Moving Image, Graphic Design and Product Design. Each subject brief differs in its challenge but all surround the concept of “Living, breathing colour”.

Elizaveta Porodina – Living, breathing colour film.
Shot over two days in Munich and the Austrian Alps, the film features Elizaveta Porodina, a Munich based fashion and fine art photographer. With an obsession for colour, the film tells the story of Elizaveta’s relationship with colour and her creative process, from her wide and varying range, to shooting with her muse Yasmina, ‘It’s always about trusting my instinct, colours shadows and light, you can sense that flow everywhere’.
Forbes Massie – Living Breathing Colour film.
Forbes Massie, founder and director of the Forbes Massie architectural visualisation studio. The film follows Forbes through his home and studio as he discusses his ideas about image-making, the relationship between music and image composition, the perception of reality and the CGI museums of the future.
